Quick General Question!

Postby ChristianM3F » Wed Oct 02, 2019 4:23 pm

Well, I think this is sort of related to significant figures, but when you've determined how many significant figures is required in your answer, are you allowed to truncate the answer?
(For example, if you need 3 significant figures and you were trying to write out 4.6962, would you be allowed to write 4.69? Or would 4.70 be the only viable answer?)
Also, I wouldn't be surprised if I used the incorrect significant figures in my example, so feel free to comment on that too

You should round it based on the 1st digit that wouldn't be included due to sig figs. So in this case 4.696 would be rounded to 4.70.

You've got me questioning my own knowledge on sig figs now, but I was taught that rounding was appropriate when doing sig figs. So 4.70 would be correct.

Yes, it would be 4.70 but don't forget that 0 on the end! Also, I'm not sure if this really pertains to your question but make sure you are rounding your final answer not a number mid-calculation. :)

In my high school chemistry class we were allowed to truncate, but my teacher said it was a bit ambiguous on what any college professor would want. She also said that rounding is generally safer, so I would get in the habit of rounding.

How significant are trailing zeros, can you round those?
