Sig Figs of Mass Percentage Composition?

Postby Angelo Mapalo 4E » Thu Oct 03, 2019 9:23 pm

I was wondering how many sig figs do we apply to percentages when we're only given a molecular/empirical formula.

So in this situation I believe you should do at least four significant figures just to be safe. At lease that is what I did. But as long as the mass percentages added up to 100% I believe you will be fine.

Yeah, I think since it's not a measurement that was actually taken in a lab, and more of a given, it's sort of up to you how many significant figures you give it

I think for emperial and molecular formula it doesn't really matter. I would take as many as possible( like 5-6 sig figs) cause in order to get a more accurate ratio, the more accurate your numbers are, the more accurate your ratio between moles will be.
