## Sig Figs in % Yield

### Sig Figs in % Yield

Imagine that a problem asks you to find the percent yield but wants 2 sig figs, and the end answer you get is 63.5%. Would that round up to 64% or down to 63%, and why?

You would use normal rounding rules and round up to 64%.

Usually when you are given a decimal that is .5 or higher, you would round up to the next whole number.

If we were to do sig figs for a percent yield question, would we use the significant figures of the grams given for the actual yield?

When I am solving a problem, do I have to keep in mind the sigfigs throughout all the calculations? Or just keep the right sigfigs for the final answer.

It would round up toe 64%, the next whole number

I think you just need to keep the same sig figs for the final answer because it's better for accuracy to round at the end. I'm pretty sure rounding down your numbers while you're still computing could mess up your values.

You would round up to 64%. This because when number ends in 5, you would round it up to the closest even number according to the rule.
