%Mass Composition
If we're asked to calculate the %mass composition of a compound, how many sig figs should we keep?

Re: %Mass Composition
The number of sig figs depends on the lowest sig fig of the numbers give in the problem. However, if the problem does not mention any numbers that you can base your sig figs on, I think it's safe to have at least 4 sig figs.

Re: %Mass Composition
The same rules for significant figures should still apply, and generally that would be anywhere from 4-5 sig figs based on what's given in the problem.

Re: %Mass Composition
It depends on the problem and the lowest number of sig figs in the original problem. Usually, it is around 4 to 5 sig figs.

Re: %Mass Composition
It depends on the number with the lowest significant figures in this case(division). It probably will be 4 or 5 significant figures.
Re: %Mass Composition
The sig figs are determined by the numbers provided in the initial problem. I.e. if a problem included 2.15 then your answer would be 3 sig figs.

Re: %Mass Composition
The first thing you should do is look at the question. It is important that you use the least number of sig figs presented in the question.

The number of sig figs depends on the lowest number that they give you in the problem.

Re: %Mass Composition
Yeah I agree with the previous few answers, look at number that has the least amount of significant figures in the problem, but usually it is just four or five sig figs.
Re: %Mass Composition
The number of sig figs you keep always depends on the lowest amount of sig figs used in the question. For ex., if the question uses the numbers 7.0g, 3g,and 0.003004g, your answer should use one sig fig, because its dependent on 3g.

Re: %Mass Composition
If there's no specification, I tend to round to 4 sig figs to keep it relatively precise and accurate; if there are sig figs listed or given in the problem, then just follow those standard conventions!

Does anyone have a video they think is a good reference for this topic? also why is it not letting me post )-:
