Range of Sig Figs
Does anyone know if Lavelle accepts a range for accuracy on sig figs. For example if your answer comes out to 2.99487 but need it to be 4 sig figs, would it be 3.000 or 2.995? Are both answers acceptable?

2.9995 would be correct because you round to the appropriate number of sig figs.

The sig fig range is based on the lowest number of sig figs given to you in the question. If there are no numeric values given in the question, ask your TA.

The number of sig figs are determined by the numbers mentioned in the inital problem.

My TA said to write each calculation answer with at least four decimal places after the decimal point so that when you do further calculations, you have the most precise value from before. But the final answer should be written with the correct number of significant figures.

The answer for self-test E.2B part a. was 2.0 x 10^2 using scientific notation and with that ended up getting sig figs of 2. I didn’t use scientific notation so my answer was 200.1, which I then used for part b. My question is if I were to do that on the test, would I still get credit since my answer was correct, or would I get partial credit taken off since my sig figs did not match the sig figs of the answer key?

Was there also a different rule for sig figs when dealing with addition/subtraction problems vs. multiplication/division problems? I think I remember learning something about that in high school but I can't remember.
