Do you guys recommend changing to the correct numbers of sig figs in the middle of an equation or when you have the final result? Also, will we get marked down if sig fig numbers of final result don't match the amount given?

I would recommend waiting until the end of the problem to change to the correct amount of sig figs because you may have an incorrect decimal or a decimal that is off a few places if you change halfway through the problem. As for the grading, I would say that it is more than likely that it would be marked if the amount of sig figs is incorrect, but I'm not 100% sure.

I think it would be best to carry all decimals throughout the calculation and then the result should be rounded at the end. You'll get the most accurate sig fig that way. I have no idea about the second part

I would highly recommend changing the sig figs at the end so you get the most accurate answer. For your second question, I think you will be marked down for that but I am not entirely sure, my suggestion would be to use the same amount of sig figs as the amount given.

I agree with all of the other responses. I definitely recommend waiting until your final answer to round based on significant figures just to make your answer more accurate. Just keep in mind that if you do end up rounding throughout your calculations that there are different rules for rounding when multiplying/dividing versus adding/subtracting values. For multiplication/division, the least number of sig figs in any number of the problem determines the number of sig figs in the answer to that problem. For addition/substraction, the final answer may have no more sig figs to the right of the decimal that the least number of sig figs to the right of the decimal of any number in the problem.

Hi, I do not recommend changing to the correct number of sig figs in the middle of an equation because it will mess up the final result. I usually change it when I have the final result. I am not exactly sure how the professor wants it, but you can ask the TA or the professor directly for more information.

I usually change my sig figs at the very end to ensure that my calculations are as close to the real value as possible. If you keep rounding midway, your answer begins to deviate from the final actual value.

Hi! They will be included in the final since it is cumulative and they take an important part on some of the calculations. I am not sure how prominent they will be on the final, but I would recommend going over it. Hope this helps!

My TA mentioned that they will be included, but not in a way that they are trying to trick you into picking an answer with the wrong SIG FIGS...just as a general concept included in questions&answers.

This is entirely speculative, but I have a feeling that sig figs will be important in any calculation problem where we are given some of the values used during calculation. I would imagine there's a little more leeway with respect to values coming from the periodic table, but I'd still try to keep sig figs in mind wherever possible.

Sig figs, when I was in high school, was considered the thing you shouldn't really worry about until the AP physics classes when a question had the answer to the thousandths and I put it to the hundredths and got it wrong. subsequently so were the rest because I had no idea that sig figs count not the best way to start off the entire semester but at least I learned.
