Midterm

Postby Dominic Benna 2E » Thu Oct 22, 2020 7:57 pm

Will there be questions on the midterm where we will have to choose between two answers with differing sig figs?

Not sure, but you should know which answer is correct if that's the case if you know all the sig-fig rules, Lavelle has a whole document dedicated to sig-figs and rounding on his website and I would definitely recommend that.

Not 100% sure, but even if there isn't a question dedicated to it, I imagine that we could get points docked off if our answers don't have the correct number of sig figs.

I think my TA told us that they wouldn't have questions where you have to choose between two answers with different sig figs. It probably wouldn't hurt to look at the sig figs document Lavelle posted though if you are still worried!

I don't think there will be questions with answer choices dealing with specific sig figs difference. I think the answer choices will be fairly distinct from each other.

My TA said that the answers will be probably be pretty distinct from one another in terms of numerical value.

On the practice quiz that I did with my TA, there was a question that had us choose between two answers with different sig figs, but that doesn’t necessarily mean a question like that will be on the midterm. If the other commenters’ TA’s have said that sig figs won’t be on the midterm, I’d go with that and not worry about it too much. I hope the midterm goes well for you!

My TA said that there shouldn't be any problems on the midterm that have you choose between answers with two different sig figs. There might be some with differences in unit conversions, but not sig figs. Hope this helps :)

Not really sure where I heard this (maybe at one of the workshops?) , but I remember someone saying that sometimes there are questions where the only difference is the sig figs. Not saying it's going to be on the midterm though, but even so, I heard partial credit would be given if that was your only mistake.

I wouldn't worry about that, like most people said, the answer choices would be very distinct- if there even are any questions on sig figs in the first place :)
