Things to remember for final?
Do we need to memorize the strong/weak acids and bases. For the most part I have em down, but I just want to make sure. Thanks

Re: Things to remember for final?
I would say probably have them memorized as there is no harm in playing it safe. I'm pretty sure there weren't that many strong acids so it shouldn't be too bad.

I think that having them memorized will make the final go more smoothly since you won't have to worry about if it a strong acid/base!

I would suggest memorizing the strong acids/bases, so that in case there is a question about it (i can forsee him throwing one or two), then it would be easier to use process of elimination.

Hello!
I would say have the strong acids memorized, because while there are some key characteristics of strong bases you can know (group 1 and 2 oxides/hydroxides) that will make memorizing all of their names unnecessary, there are no such common trends amongst the strong acids. Also, there are only 7 strong acids, so it shouldn't be too difficult to remember them all.

Re: Things to remember for final?
I would definitely memorize all the strong acids and bases. There are some pretty good mnemonics online to use if you need some help!

Re: Things to remember for final?
You only really need to know which acids/bases are strong and if you know the general rules for whether something is an acid or base, you can rule out if it's strong. There's too many weak acids/bases to memorize, but you can remember the strong ones easily.

Re: Things to remember for final?
Ok so I understand we should memorize the strong acids/bases but which ones are they... The ones he mentioned in Week 9 Wed. Lecture?
I believe these are the strong bases he mentioned (Li2O,NaOH,Na2O,KOH,CaO,Ca(OH2),Mg(OH)2) .. but I cannot find the strong acids. can someone list them? thank you!

Re: Things to remember for final?
Is there some kind of sheet or something in the textbook that lists all of the strong acids/bases we should know for the final?

Re: Things to remember for final?
Since there aren’t too many, make flash cards and memorize them! I’m sure you’ll feel better if you do.

These are the 7 strong acids:
HCl - hydrochloric acid
HNO3 - nitric acid
H2SO4 - sulfuric acid
HBr - hydrobromic acid
HI - hydroiodic acid
HClO4 - perchloric acid
HClO3 - chloric acid

I would say to be on the safe side for you to memorize them just in case.

I would memorize them and memorize the factors that make strong acids and bases.

Re: Things to remember for final?
There's a page in the "Chempendix" in Macmillan listing all the strong acids and bases and how to identify weak acids and bases that really helped me memorize the important ones!

Hi!
This chart from Macmillan was especially helpful to me, you should check it out! :)

Hi! I would say to memorize them, since we will only be given the periodic table and the formula sheet on the final.

Hey!
I learned a way to memorize the strong acids from the UA sessions. Its as follows:
"SO I BRought NO CLean CLOthes"
SO refers to H2SO4, I refers to HI, BR refers to HBr, NO refers to HNO3, CL refers to HCl, and CLO refers to HClO4/HClO3. I hope this makes it easier for you!

Re: Things to remember for final?
The "SO I BRought NO CLean CLOthes" thing is genius. I typically just memorized them all.
