Priority with double/triple bonds

Postby Matt Jacobs 3H » Sun Mar 06, 2016 12:09 pm

When numbering carbons does a double bond get priority over a triple bond for the lowest number or is it the other way around?Or does this question not matter because there will always be other functional group to decide the priority?

Functional groups won't always be in molecules with double or triple bonds.

Functional groups take priority over both double and triple bonds. Triple bonds take priority over double bonds, and double bonds take priority over single bonds.

So from greatest to least priority (aka whichever ones you give the lowest number) it goes: functional group, triple bond, double bond, and single bond.
