Haloalkane/Haloalkene Naming question

Postby Sunny Chera 1N » Tue Mar 14, 2017 11:20 pm

On the top right hand side on page 50 of the Introduction to Organic Chemistry textbook, the geometric isomer with the Cl and F being trans across the double bond, also has a triple bond. The book named it as (E)-3-Chloro-4-fluoro-7-methyloct-3-en-5-yne. However, why can it not be (E)-6-Chloro-5-fluoro-2-methyloct-5-en-3-yne? In other words, do you prioritize the triple bond or the double bond first? Or its the former naming preferred because 3,4<6,5?

Yes, alkenes are prioritized over alkynes for numbering.
