order of functional groups

Postby Aschreck 2G » Sun Mar 06, 2016 11:03 pm

If two or more functional groups are present on an organic molecule, is the order for naming determined alphabetically?

We don't need to know this for the scope of 14B (asked Professor Lavelle, and heard from TAs Daniel Hatfield and Brandon Yoshida), but when compounds contain more than one functional group, the order of precedence determines which groups are named with prefix or suffix forms. The order is as follows: cations, carboxylic acids, nitriles, aldehydes, ketones, alcohols, hydroperoxides, and amines.
