Difference between Alcohol and Aldehydes

Postby Andrew Ghaly 3H » Thu Mar 10, 2016 1:09 am

I understand that the H is attached to the center atom for aldehydes, but how can we tell whether or not it is based on the molecular formula?

When you are given the structural formula for an aldehyde, the H comes directly after the C (ie CH3CH2CHO Propanal). Hope that helped.

In the book it said that an aldehyde is seen at the end of the carbon chain. So if you're given the molecular formula, for example of ethanal (CH3CHO) you can see that CHO is at the end. It's kind of like a trend. Hope that helps.
