For the Fructose structure, how come they have hydroxy- instead of -ol for the OH's? I thought that for -oxy, it was for ethers while OH's stood for alcohols/

Using the hydroxy group is a way of naming "polyols," molecules with multiple alcohol (OH-) groups. The difference between this and naming of ethers lies in hydroxy vs. -oxy (methoxy, ethoxy, etc.).

Are we just supposed to know what fructose looks like? Where were we ever taught the chemical formula of fructose in order to be able to give its IUPAC name and draw it?
