What makes an alcohol secondary? How can you tell?

The difference between primary, secondary, and tertiary alcohols depends on how many other carbons the carbon attached to the -OH is bonded to. In a primary alcohol, the carbon attached to the -OH group is only attached to one other carbon. In a secondary alcohol the carbon attached to the -OH group is bonded to two other carbons, and in tertiary alcohols the carbon attached to the -OH group is also attached to 3 other carbons. The names of alcohols say which carbon is attached to the -OH (ex: in 5-methyl-3-hexanol the -OH is attached to the 3rd carbon) so you can determine whether the alcohol is primary, secondary, or tertiary based on this information. Hope this helped! :)
