2013 final Q6B

Hello, how do we know that the common names are?
we can chose from cstearic acid, glycerin, and cetyl alcohol

you don't need to know the common names -- you have the IUPAC names in that same order, so you know the IUPAC name for the respective common name, and can just use that for identifying the structure

Just remember the suffix to the functional groups: ie alcohol is -ol, carboxylic acid is -ic acid... etc., from the name you can identify the structure.
