Numbering carbons in the chain for ethers

Postby Raeann Salonga 3C » Fri Feb 26, 2016 5:42 pm

Since the oxygen splits the two carbon chains on either side, when numbering substituents does the beginning of the chain start with the carbon closest to the oxygen?

Technically yes because the functional group dictates the carbon numbering, so the carbon next to the oxygen for the ether group would be the #1 carbon.
