What is the suffix indicate group for ether? In my course reader I have the - oxy, but what is the actual structure that is attached?

To expand, an ether with a propyl and methyl attached to the oxygen would be methoxypropane. It is methoxypropane rather than propoxymethane because of alphabetical preference of meth- over prop-.

One of the TAs mentioned that the -oxy suffix goes to the smaller carbon chain. That is why it would be methoxypropane. Is this incorrect? Or does the -oxy simply go to the alphabetically first substituent.
