Ether as a substituent

Postby GutierrezCruz_1J » Sat Mar 12, 2016 8:58 am

I know that other functional groups get priority in numbering over ether but how does an ether compare to a simple substituent, and when should it not be included in the parent chain?

I covered this in detail in my Friday review session. See link at viewtopic.php?f=8&t=13801 to watch it.

An ether has more numbering priority than simple substituents. If a carbon chain would include higher priority functional groups, but not the ether, then you wouldn't directly include it. Naming wise, the ether serves as a substituent anyways. Hope this helped.
