Double/triple bonds and Functional Groups

Postby samchung2f » Tue Mar 07, 2017 4:36 pm

When numbering Carbons in the main chain, do double/triple bonds take priority over functional groups or do functional groups take priority over double/triple bonds?

Functional groups come before

ex) 2-chlorobutane is correct
2-butalchlorine or anything else is incorrect

ex) phenylalanine

ex) 2-methylbutane

Sorry I think you misunderstood my question. What I was trying to ask is would you give functional groups the lowest number when numbering carbons in the main chain or double/triple bonded carbons the lowest number?

Double and triple bonds are considered functional groups. However they are relatively low in the order of priority so you tend to number other function groups first. See the attached doc for some examples.
