Carbonyl Functional Group

Postby Anthony Rosas 2K » Sat Mar 05, 2016 7:09 pm

Is carbonyl the general name for the aldehyde and ketone functional groups or are aldehydes and ketones separate functional groups?

A carbonyl functional group is just a carbon atom double bonded to an oxygen atom. It is a part of many other functional groups like ketone, aldehyde, and carboxylic acid. So yes, aldehydes and ketones are different functional groups that both contain the carbonyl functional group
