Two Ketone Groups

Postby Uma Ramaratnam 2I » Tue Mar 08, 2016 9:09 pm

On page 61 of Introduction to Organic Chemistry, it talks about how when there are two ketone groups -- then the name ends with a -dione, and the example they give is Butanedione where the functional groups are located on the 2nd and 3rd carbon. I was wondering if the name 2, 3 - butanedione was also valid? Or do we just assume that that those are the only two valid spots for the ketones to be located on--so the numbers are not necessary?

Thank You!

There is no numbers for butanedione because ketones can't be on the end carbons, so for the 4 carbon chain of butane, the Oxygens have to be attached at the 2nd and 3rd carbons, so the 2,3 isn't needed. I think if you included the 2,3 that would ok though, its just additional information!
