The molecule on the bottom of page 66 in the Ochem textbook is all-(Z)-Icosa-5,8,11,14,17-pentaenoic acid. Can someone explain step-by-step how it is named?

You know how "nona-" is 9, and "deca-" is 10? Well, "icosa-" is 20. So you know you have 20 carbons.

"Pentaenoic acid" can be dissected into "penta", "en", and "oic acid". "Penta" + "en" means there are 5 "ene"s, or 5 alkenes. "All (Z)" means that all 5 are trans alkenes.

Finally the "oic acid" just means there's a carboxylic acid at one of the ends of the 20 carbon chain.
