Carboxylic Acid naming

Postby Mir Raza 3D » Thu Mar 10, 2016 12:58 am

Does it matter what compound is listed before and after the -oxy- ? or could u switch the two and still have the right answer?

For carboxylic acids, the suffix is -oic acid. The suffix -oxy is used when naming a molecule with an ether. If you have an ether, the -oxy goes to the shorter fragment of the molecule.

For example, the name for CH3CH2-O-CH2CH2CH2CH3 would be ethoxybutane.
