What is a carbonyl group? Is this the same as saying carboxylic acid?

A carboxyl functional group is a carbonyl plus an alcohol (functional group). A carbonyl functional group has a double bonded oxygen to a carbon atom that can be either bonded by one or two hydrogen atoms or two carbon atoms (aldehydes and ketones). A carbonyl group is not the same things as saying carboxylic acid. They are two different functional groups. Since the hydrogen is easily lost, the carboxyl function group (-COOH) can be referred to as carboxylic acid.

Pages 97 and 98 in the course reader give good visual representations of the different functional groups.

I hope this helps!
