Stability of carboxylic acid

Postby Vivian Chen 3A » Sat Mar 07, 2015 5:55 pm

Since carboxylic acids disassociate in water, would it be more stable as RCOO- or RCOOH? Since there's resonance in the first structure but no resonance in the second structure.

RCOOH is a weak acid with K < 1. Therefore you know the left (RCOOH) is favored over the right (RCOO- + H+).
