In molecules with isomers, there are similar atoms, like two Cl molecules, bonded to a central atom. In cis isomers, the similar atoms are on the same side. In trans isomers, the similar atoms are on opposite sides.

The easiest identifier is that cis isomers have atoms that are the same next to each other and trans atoms have them across from each other.

Trans isomers occur when a molecule has the potential to be nonpolar OR polar, and the atoms are arranged in a polar fashion. Cis isomers occur when a molecule has the potential to be nonpolar OR polar, and the atoms are arranged in a nonpolar fashion.

Cis would be when the potential bonding atoms are on the same side, and trans would be when the potential bonding atoms are across from each other.
