Homework Chapter 2 Question 44

Postby dmcclintick » Fri Mar 04, 2016 6:53 pm

Question 44 asks for the IUPAC name for the following compound:

The correct answer is N,N-diethylpropanamine, which makes sense, however, I drew it like this:

Which would give the name N-methyl N-propylpropanamine. Why is this incorrect?

P.S. the bottom CH3 is supposed to attach to the N but I am having trouble formatting it correctly

The thing is, the way you're doing it is that you're taking one of the (CH3CH2) groups and taking that CH2 and putting it on the other (CH3CH2) group, leaving the "methyl" group on the N that you are referring to. It groups the (CH3CH2) for a reason because they stay together. Thus, you can't have N-methyl-N-propylpropanamine, even though the "molecular formula" would be the same - the condensed formula is not.

Return to “*Amines”
