Numbering of carbons in amines

Postby Pratyush Kandimalla 2O » Fri Mar 10, 2017 9:18 am

In amine compounds with multiple hydrocarbon substituents (2 or 3), if one of them has a substituent, which direction do we start naming it in. Should the Carbon attached to the Nitrogen get the lowest number (1) or should we try to make the substituent get the lowest number?

When numbering such structures, I believe it is best to number the carbons in order to provided the lowest numbering to all the attached substituents. If I'm not mistaken, the nitrogen aspect of the amine would be treated similar to other substituents so we would number the carbons to give the lowest value.
