Naming

Just for clarification, the numbering of substituents is determined by the alphabetical order and the first-named group gets the lowest number if two could potentially have the same number.

Exactly! So say the two substituents are on carbon 2 and carbon 4 no matter whether you count the carbons from the left or right, then the lower number goes to the substituent that comes first alphabetically.
