Electrophiles vs Nucelophiles

Postby Rachel Lipman » Thu Feb 25, 2016 11:24 pm

Any quick tips on determining whether an element/compound is an electrophile or nucleophile?

Hey! Something is usually a nucleophile if it has a negative charge or a full octet of electrons. Something is usually an electrophile if it has a positive charge and not a full octet. Thus it would want to gain electrons.

Nucleophiles are electron rich and are basically Lewis Bases like OH-. Electrophiles are electron deficient.
