nucleophile and electrophile

Postby 704443104 » Thu Mar 10, 2016 6:27 pm

How can I tell if a compound is a nucleophile or an electrophile

Electrophiles have a positive charge and nucleophiles have a negative charge, but there are neutral electrophiles and nucleophiles that can be tricky to identify. Usually the lewis structures of nucleophiles will have one or more lone pairs. Electrophiles can be cations, radicals, or Lewis acids. An electrophile usually has one or more atoms without an octet of valence electrons. atoms with 6 or 7 valence electrons are also electrophiles such as AlCl3 which has only six valence electrons.

does it also have to do with their electronegativity?

I'm pretty sure it does because a greater electronegativity means the molecule is more attracted to electrons. Electrophiles are also attracted to electrons meaning the greater the electronegativity of a substance the stronger the electrophile and the weaker the nucleophile.
