Question Regarding Alkenes

Postby Rhiannon Imbeah 2I » Tue Mar 07, 2017 11:56 pm

In regards to alkenes, it was said in lecture that in a chemical reaction the pi-bond would break rather than the sigma bond. Why is this?

Pi bonds are weaker than sigma bonds since there is less electron cloud overlap in pi bonds than there is in sigma bonds

Also once the double bond is broken, a single bond remains and a single bond must always be a sigma bond.
