Self-test 4.2A

Postby Noor_Burney_1L » Sun Mar 12, 2017 9:22 pm

On page 149 of the introduction to organic chemistry book, self-test 4.2A asks to draw the lewis structure for the aryl carbocation,
3,5-dimethylbenzene-1-ylium.
I understand that it should be a ring structure, but I am confused on how to draw the other parts of the lewis structure based off of the name given.

We know that two methyl groups are attached to the benzyl carbocation because it says dimethyl. We first draw the ring structure of Benzene with a positive charge on one of the carbon atoms. We will number this as (1). Te name of the compound indicates that there are methyl groups attached at the 3rd and 5th carbons on the benzyl ring therefore we count from the positively charged carbon and attach methyl groups to it. I hope this helps.
