"Complete the half‑reactions for the cell shown, and show the shorthand notation for the cell. The electrode on the left is the anode, and the one on the right is the cathode."
How do you tell which is the correct half-reaction for both cathode and anode?

The question should tell you that the anode is on the left and the cathode is on the right. The diagram is labeled with substances in the anode in cathode. The anode is being oxidized, while the cathode is being reduced. This will allow you to fill in the missing spots in the half reactions.

Basically, we know from the picture the anode is made of the metal Pb, so the half- reaction that is occurring there should involve Pb and it should be an oxidation half reaction(losing e-).
Then, we also know from the picture the cathode is made of the metal Ag, so the half- reaction that is occurring there should involve Ag and it should be an reduction half reaction(gaining e-).

And remember that the oxidation reaction is in the anode and the reduction is the cathode.

For the shorthand notation, why is the anion written in the middle?
