Hello!

The question is asking which pairs of ions would have the greatest coulombic attraction in a solid compound. What is coulombic attraction?

Coulombic attraction is the attraction between oppositely charged particles. For example, the protons in the nucleus of an atom have an attraction for the electrons surrounding the nucleus. The problem is asking you which has the greatest electronegativity.

Coulombic attraction is the force of attraction between positive and negative charges. The coulombic attraction can be calculated using Coulombs law

F = kq1q2 / r2

where f= force in newtons
k= coulombs constant
q1= charge of first particle
q2= charge of second particle
r= distance between particles

Hope this helps!

What is the most frequent scenario in which this is used?

How would we know what the distance between particles is in these types of problems? Would that be given?

Also what is the coulombs constant?

It's essentially asking you which one has the highest electronegativity.
