Hybrid orbitals

Postby Priscilla Okaiteye » Sun May 06, 2018 10:42 pm

I don't quite get how hybrid orbitals are formed. How do the s and p orbitals become hybridized?

Basically, orbitals hybridize because hybridization allows for the molecule to be in its lowest possible energy state (or most stable state). The shape of hybridized orbitals depends on how many electrons are present how much energy they have

s & p orbitals become hybridized as the orbitals "mix"

The hybridization of orbitals is also greatly favored because hybridized orbitals are lower in energy compared to their separated, unhybridized counterparts. This results in more stable compounds when hybridization occurs. For example, carbon has four unpaired electrons it can have four equal energy bonds.

Does hybridization typically occur?
