Ionic bonds

Postby Valeria Viera 1B » Thu May 17, 2018 1:34 am

How do we show ionic bonds?
In a covalent bond we can draw a line that shows two atoms sharing electrons
but ionic bonds don't share electrons
So like let's say we're drawing the lewis structure for NaCl
Do we just write Na+ Cl- and that shows a bond?

I'm pretty sure we haven't entirely covered this yet in class, but in drawing ionic bonds you have to show the transfer of electrons from one atom to another. Check out this diagram and website for an example of the ionic bond between Na+ and Cl-

When do we place brackets around ions?

I believe that's when you draw a Lewis structure for a charged molecule with covalent bonds like NH4+. In this case, nitrogen would have 4 valence electrons like carbon instead of the expected 5. To account for this lost electron you can put brackets around the Lewis structure and denote it with the exponent of +1. Hope this helped! :)

Brackets are used for all Lewis structures for ions because it shows the net charge.

I'm still confused on how to draw a lewis structure of an ionic bond. Do we not just draw a line like Na - Cl?

I think you put brackets around each ion, or am I wrong?
