Re: ranking
by the formal charge. The most important is the lowest energy and the one with formal charges on each element closest to zero as possible.

Re: ranking
If the two resonance structures have the same formal charge, would they be considered equal in rank?

I believe so

Re: ranking
If they have the same formal charge overall, choose the one with the smallest individual formal charges. For example, if one of them has -2 and 2, so the formal charge is 0, and the other has all 0's, the one with all 0's is ranked higher.

Re: ranking
You rank the resonance structures based off the formal charges you find for each atom in the structure. The structure with the formal charge of 0 for the central atom is the most stable.

Re: ranking
you calculate the formal charge of all the atoms, since the most stable structure will see that all atoms have formal charges close to zero

Re: ranking
A resonance structure has a greater importance if it fulfills the octet rule and if it has minimum charge separation. In addition, there should be no like charges on atoms that are next to each other.

Resonance structures are supposed to have the same formal charge, but they can differ in rank.

Re: ranking
There can be many different resonance structures, but the ones with the lowest formal charge contribute the most to the resonance
