Lone pairs create a greater electron repulsion. Therefore, they tend to reduce the bond angles.

This is called lone pair repulsion and a lone pair of electron at the central atom always tries to repel bonded pair of electrons. This causes bonds to be displaced resulting in a decrease of bond angle.

Bond angle is affected by the presence of lone pair of electrons at the central atom. A lone pair of electrons at the central atom always tries to repel the shared pair (bonded pair) of electrons. Due to this, the bonds are displaced slightly inside resulting in a decrease of bond angle

I think that the degree of bond angles have been found experimentally, and therefore we need to be able to look at the molecule and determine the bond angles based on the info that we have been taught.

Think of the electron charge, because electron pairs are negatively charged they repel other negatively charged particles, like other electron pairs. They also repel molecules but not with the same force that they do lone pairs.

The negative charge of lone pair electrons causes repulsion with other electrons. This results in a greater angle in the shape of a molecule.
