homework problem 4.17

So #4.17 asks: Predict the bond angles at the central atom of the following molecules and ions: (a) ozone, O3; (b) azide ion, N3-; (c) cyanate ion, CNO-; (d) hydronium ion, H3O+.

Can someone please explain why N3- and NCO- can both have bond angles of about 180?

If you're ever confused about shape I think the best way is to start by drawing the lewis structure. For N3- the lewis structure has only 2 regions of electron density and no lone pairs, so it is linear. (Using this website : https://chemstuff.co.uk/academic-work/a ... molecules/ ) The bond angle for all linear shapes is 180 degrees. The same concepts can be applied for NCO-. let me know if i wasn't clear

Based on the lewis structure there are 2 regions of electron density, therefore, the molecule has a linear shape with 180 degree angles.

Well since both shapes are linear, they have bond angles of 180 degrees.
