Sigma and Pi Bonds

How do you know when there is sigma/pi bonding?

There is always one sigma bond present in a single bond. In a double bond, there is always one sigma bond and one pi bond. A triple bond consists of one sigma bond and two pi bonds, and so on and so forth.

single bond= sigma bond
double bond= sigma bond + pie bond
triple bond= sigma bond + 2 pie bonds

Why are sigma and pi bonds distinguished? More specifically, what makes something a sigma bond and what makes something a pi bond?

sigma and pi bonds differ in shape and the distribution of electron density.
