The number before the sp

Postby Katarina Ho -1B » Tue Jun 05, 2018 10:59 pm

Hi i was wondering what the number before the sp represents. I know in class we did examples where some of the hybridizations were 3sp2.

I think that just refers to the energy level.

Yeah it should signify the orbital its taking place in so for 3sp2 I believe it would be the third row and the sp2 would have 3 attachments.

With energy levels, make sure to take note which level each orbital is on depending on the location of the element on the periodic table.
