How does size affect polarizing power/ polarizability

Postby kellyz_1C » Wed Jun 06, 2018 12:48 pm

I'm still a bit confused on how size affects these traits. Does it have something to do with electron shielding?

The larger the size, the more polarizability it has because larger atoms are usually easier to remove electrons from. However, the larger the size, the less polarizing power it has I believe.

You can think of it like how much the atom wants to hold onto its electrons. A small atom is much more likely to hold onto its electrons than a large one because it has way less electrons to begin with. Therefore a large atom is more polarizable, or it is easier to take electrons from it. A small atom has more polarizing power because it can get closer to the anion and exert more force on its electrons. Also, a smaller atom, or highly charged atom wants the electrons more than a big atom, so it has more "power" to take them away.

Polarizability is directly related to size, while polarizing power is inversely related to size.
