Polyprotic Question!

This is probably a super easy question, but how do we know if an acid or base is polyprotic?

Polyprotic acids are capable of losing more then one proton per molecule. Both polyprotic acids and bases are have more then one hydrogen per molecule. Hope this helps.

For example, H3PO4 is polyprotic because it has more than one proton to donate.

H3PO4 --> H2PO4- --> HPO42- --> PO43-.

The first proton is released most easily. Successive protons are less likely to dissociate.

If a compound is polyprotic then it means that it can lose more than one proton. So it'll probably have something like "Hsub2"

A polyprotic acid isn't necessarily stronger than a monoprotic acid. Whether an acid is strong depends on the equilibrium constant for acids, Ka = ([A-][H+])/[AH]. Having more number of H atoms in a molecule doesn't necessarily mean that the molecule is more willing to donate the H atom.

Although having more than one H proton doesn't always mean that it's polyprotic, it's a good sign that it might be because it has multiple protons in the form of H atoms that it can release.

Polyprotic acids can essentially lose a proton (H+) more than once, or they can lose more than one H+.
