Monodentate or bidentate

Will methylamine (CH3NH2) be a monodentate or a bidentate ligand? and what atoms will bind to a metal ion?

CH3NH2 will be a monodenate ligand. You can tell by drawing or picturing the Lewis structure. I'll help you out. CH3NH2 will have a total of 14 electrons to use for the Lewis structure. You would bond 3 hydrogens and 1 nitrogen to the carbon. Then you would bond the two remaining hydrogens to the nitrogen and give nitrogen a lone pair. This lone pair of electrons is what makes CH3NH2 monodentate and not bidentate (this lone pair will bond to the metal). And usually these ligands bond to transition metals. I hope this helped!
