Is there a minimum number of posts/replies to get full points?

I believe you need to post in one way or another 3 times per week to receive full credit for that week. Each post/comment is worth 1 point.

@005 if it's like the other homework, it's due on next Friday's lecture the first week, and then before your discussion section each week after that

Yes, I believe that you receive a point everytime you participate in the forums as either a response to a thread or posing a question. Also, I believe these are checked and marked down by your TA.

In the website, there is a tab that says "Test and Exam Schedule" but the first test will be on October 9 in your discussion section.

I agree I am having trouble with that too but in the upper left side with the three lines next to "Quick Links" shows a tab that you can view "your posts"

Readings for Class

Postby Cecilia Jardon 1I » Sat Sep 29, 2018 6:10 pm

Hi, I am confused about the readings that we need to do for class since there is not a topic for each week in the syllabus. For example, would the Review of Chemical and Physical Principles fundamentals be for Monday's lecture week 1?

Hi Cecilia, for the readings for Chem, I am reading based on what the lectures are going to be about. For example, you can look at the lecture outlines he provided online. I am guessing that the lecture outline #1 is for week one and so on.

I assume that this week is the review given what my TA went over on Friday. However, I'm not positive and I plan to ask during office hours.

The lecture outlines also have the chapters that are found right above the problem/question set.

I found that section and in FAQ it says there should be a button that says "New Topic" somewhere in order to post a new question, but I can't find that anywhere.

Does anyone know when our first homework assignment is due? Is it due on the Friday of week 1 during lecture or during our discussion in week 1?

Also, I remember Professor Lavelle saying that we can "choose" our homework. Does that mean we can go through our textbook and choose the questions in the lessons that Lavelle specifically pointed out in the website??

You can receive a maximum of 3 points per week, and you get a point every time you make a post or reply to a post. If you post 3 times per week, you will receive full credit.

The homework is due on Friday during lecture on week 1. But for all the subsequent weeks it will be due at your discussion period. I am pretty sure for the homework, he meant that we pick any 7 questions from the list of relevant questions he listed on the syllabus.

Yes, Dr. Lavelle assigned a list of problems from each essential fundamentals section but we have the freedom of choosing any seven that we want to submit on Friday (which is only for this week. Later on, homework will be turned into our TA's during discussion).

I think that either asking or answering a question is sufficient. You must interact three times per week with Chemistry Community according to the syllabus starting week 1 if there are 10 weeks in the quarter.

As long as you participate in any of the the given discussion topics or ask your own question a minimum of 3 times a week, you will receive a maximum of 3 points for the entire week for 10 weeks. Chemistry Community counts for 30 points of your entire grade for the quarter. The syllabus for this class provides information regarding the grading system and procedures in case you are interested.

I think the cutoff is on Fridays. So basically three posts by Friday week one, three posts by Friday week two, etc.

Does it matter if we respond to a question that's already been answered or do we just need to make three posts?

I'm not sure what you're asking for about review. In lecture, we'll be covering new topics so if you need review I recommend going to office hours or looking at all the undergraduate peer learning times (posted as a link on the website).

They aren't due. It's to help you prepare for lecture and go over the material. It was very helpful for me because I haven't taken chem since my junior year of high school so it was good review.

Is it the whole of the Fundamental section, or just the sections mentioned in Outline 1?

Thanks!

The cut off for discussion posts is 11:59 pm on Sunday and I believe there is a software that automatically checks if you've posted at least 3 times that week. I got this information from a friend who asked the TA.

I don't think that they do because in the syllabus it says to have 3 posts per week which is 3 points for that week, however you can do more than three but I don't think they can roll over

My T.A. said that the deadline for the posts each week is Sunday night!

I think its more of a general grading system, I was never asked by my TA for a username so I think they use your UID and the system just checks if you've posted within the deadline. Not 100% on this but so far it seems to me that its done this way.

If we forget to do the 3 post one week, do we automatically loose those 3 points? Does anyone know if there is a way to gain them? Thank you!

I agree I am having trouble with that too but in the upper left side with the three lines next to "Quick Links" shows a tab that you can view "your posts"

So you go to the main page and scroll down until you see the section labeled "Chem 14a", then go ahead and click on the subject matter that pertains to your question. Then you'll get to a page where you'll see a list of questions, but above the announcements there's a button that says "New Topic". Go ahead and click on that and you can post your question there!

Hope this helped :)

I was told by my TA that you just have to make three posts. I asked when the end of the week is considered and he told me to have the posts done before Friday's lecture.

My TA said Sunday night but I know a lot of others have been saying Friday so it probably just depends on when each different TA is checking.

Everytime you post something, whether it is a reply or your own post, the system gives you a point. Your TA will not check what you are posting, it does it automatically.

My TA said that the cut off is Sunday night, 3 points each week, but the professor will not count and give you the points until the end of the quarter.

You just have to post 3 times within the week by Sunday night to get full points

I believe each week Dr. Lavelle will give us a minimum number of posts on Chemistry Community. As long as we reach that number of posts (counting both questions and responses) we will receive full points for the week. For example for week 1, we have to post 5 times on chemistry community.

Are we supposed to post 3 or 5 times a week? Because the syllabus said "5 pts per week" for online discussion

Yeah that's what I also read in the syllabus.I heard Professor Lavelle say during lecture either Friday or Monday that posting 5 times a week gets you the maximum 5 points for the online discussion.

I heard professor Lavelle say you had to post either questions or answers five times a week to receive the full five points.

This is totally unrelated to this topic, but how do you post your own question with a topic on this website? I've been trying to figure it out but I can't seem to do it.

Can the TA's still find our posts even if our UID is our username?
