Week 1 Homework Assignment

Postby Michael_Navarro_1H » Mon Oct 01, 2018 12:46 pm

Is the homework for this week just to do 7 problems listed in the "Review of Chemical and Physical Principles" unit?

On the outlines Dr. Lavelle posted there are sections that are titled 7th Edition Fundamentals, and 6th Edition Fundamentals. You'll pick 7 problems from either of those depending on which book you have. Usually, we are supposed to turn in our homework in our discussion sessions, but for week 1 (which is this week) we will turn our homework in ON FRIDAY IN CLASS.

From my knowledge, Destiny is correct - the homework is due Friday in class. You'll benefit from doing homework this week even if it is not assigned in the end because Lavelle put in his syllabus that he uses homework questions on exams as an incentive to study.

Yep! You do any seven problems from the assigned problems and turn it in.

How are you all picking which problems to do? I was thinking of turning in about one from the various fundamentals sections, but I was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions on which problems to do/turn in!

On the syllabus it says one of the homework problems from each unit will be on the test, so I think it's best to try to do all of them, then choose whichever 7 you're most confident on to turn in for homework credit!

I talked to one of the TAs and she said that they will be grading the homework based on picking problems that are relevant to the material that was taught that week and trying your best to complete them correctly and understand the concepts of each problem. Also, I suggest doing more than 7 problems (aside from the homework) separately for extra practice.

The homework is to turn in 7 problems. But, what about the modules that we need to do? Is that just for practice for us?

The modules are recommended but they are not officially due. When you take the pre and post assessments, it says that it is not for a grade and they do not know which students are taking the assessments. I did them and they helped me a lot.

On the grading portion of the syllabus, it says that we gets 3 points a week for the weekly online discussion, so that means we just have to either post or reply to a post to get those points?

Yes. I believe that's correct. I think he just wants to see the class communicating with each other.

The modules are basically the material Lavelle has been covering in class. They are pretty helpful if you want to easily follow along with his lecture or if you aren't as familiar with the high school chem material. I also thought they were a good review before attempting the homework.

Yeah I think doing the modules will be really helpful even because they show what topics to focus on and what we might get tested on later

Does anyone know how the 7 questions will be graded? Should I be showing every single step and make sure my work is super clear, or is it more based on completion?

in response to the above question, I think my TA today said that it's based on how correct it is. but we always have the solutions manual to guide us through so we can double check our work and make sure it's the correct answer and it's probably best to show every step so when you look back at it you know your train of thought

In response to @Kristen Kim 1I question about the online discussion, I asked my TA and she said that we ask a question/comment three times per week to earn the 3 points!
