Dilutions

Postby madisondesilva1c » Wed Oct 03, 2018 12:41 pm

If there are two compounds going into a solution, how do you calculate the molarity? Would it be correct to find the moles of the total solute (adding the moles of solute 1 and solute 2 together found from the molecular mass) and then proceed as normal?

Yes, that would be the correct way to calculate the molarity of the solution.

Would it be any different if I were to add their given masses and then divide by their combined molar masses in one mole and then divide by the volume? Or is it necessary to perform each mole calculation separately?

You would need to calculate the molar masses separately as they are different compounds with different molar masses.
