The Balmer and Lyman series are important because they help determine the energy level of electrons, and this is important when using Rydberg's equation.

The Balmer series is used when in the visible spectrum, with n1=2.
The Lyman series is used in the UV spectrum, with n1=1

Essentially, they are important because they are the names of the major groups of spectral lines that Hydrogen gives off. The Balmer series is in the visible region of light, and the Lyman series is in the UV region of light.

There are also other regions, such as the Pachen series in IR light, but they aren't as famous. The names essentially group together the spectral lines that are in the same region of the spectrum.

The Balmer and Lyman series are very important because they are the names of spectral lines, and they show when electrons rest and at which levels. For the Balmer series, it handles visible light and electrons rest at n=1; on the other hand, the Lyman series handles UV light, and electrons rest at n=2.

The Lyman series are the lines that occur from electrons dropping down to the n=1 energy level. The Balmer series is when electrons drop to n=2.
