F13

F 13 asks for the name of the compound for which we find the empirical and molecular compound. Are we expected to know how to determine the name of compounds given this information? If so, what are the rules for the nomenclature?

I think it's just like basic compounds, like knowing that CO3 is carbonate so Na2CO3 is sodium carbonate. If you looked up "polyatomic ions", those are probably the only ones that you would need to know. There's only like 6 I think that you would really need to know.

Carbonate CO3 (-2)
Nitrate NO3 (-1)
Sulfate SO4 (-2)
Phosphate PO4 (-3)
Hydroxide OH (-1)
Ammonium NH4 (+1)

Hope this helps!

Once you've solved part a you'll end up with PCl5. To name the compound you start with the first element P (Phosphorus) and then you look at the second part of the compound Cl5 which translates to pentachoride (penta- denoting five and chloride is the naming structure for chlorine). Your answer would be phosphorus pentacloride.

Here is a link that really helped with nomenclature when I was first learning it:

Hope this helps!!
